Not only interventions to mitigate hydrogeological risk but also the return of sports facilities and a public house. This is what the “Save Galati Marina” Committee asks for, which, in the municipality’s announcement regarding future investments for the creation of sports areas, denounced the absence of the village from the proposals presented.
“We learn through the press and with the usual political triumphalist tones, that the city of Messina will see projects financed with over 15 million for the restoration of sports facilities, but in this context Galati Marina and its famous sports field, which also trained internationally renowned champions.
The Save Galati Marina Committee has always highlighted in its interventions that for the salvation of the coastal village, not only interventions to mitigate the risk of coastal erosion were needed, but that, at the same time, everything that the sea should be given back to the town took away, including a sports field and a public green house”, we read in a note.
“The Galati field in past years has been a point of reference for sport throughout the city, not only for football, but also in hosting the baseball and American football championships, providing not only a place for training and challenge for athletes, but also entertainment and diffusion of sports culture with positive effects on the entire southern area, also for the economic aspect with for example the related activities created around catering and overnight stays.
We would have expected greater attention for that town which today, yes, sees beautiful boulders on the shore, but still has an open wound given the social and economic hardships”, they continue.
“What remains of the Galati field can be reused, resized and repurposed for sports more suited to the area that currently exists, just as one might think about the use of land restricted by the master plan for nearby services, we certainly cannot accept a policy of abandonment or worse alienation of assets in favor of third parties which under the false name of “valorization” could be given to other bodies, which certainly would not have economic and planning capabilities like those that the public administration has act and take charge of public affairs and citizens’ requests, to remedy a condition also caused by their previous responsibilities. We take this opportunity to reiterate the state of emergency and the territorial needs linked to the hydrogeological instability of the aforementioned territory”, they conclude.
