Borussia Mönchengladbach cannot get past a 1-1 draw at 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the eighth round of the German Bundesliga.
The first round was bitter for Mainz. Captain Jonathan Burkardt sustained a muscle injury to his thigh during a sprint. The 24-year-old striker had to be substituted injured after 20 minutes.
By the way, Burkardt passes the captain’s armband on to Nadiem Amiri, who causes the next shocking moment a quarter of an hour later. The offensive player is treated for his ankle after a challenge, but can continue the game.
Despite Burkardt’s early substitution, Mainz were the more dangerous team throughout the first half, but failed to score.

Even after the break, Mainz were better and deservedly took the lead in the 55th minute. After a half-high cross from Paul Nebel, ÖFB legionnaire Stefan Lainer pushed the ball into his own goal with both feet while trying to clear it.
Practically in return, the Gladbachers provided the perfect answer and equalized the deficit. Tim Kleindienst nods in after a cross from Franck Honorat to make it 1-1 (57′).
The game then develops into an energetic exchange of blows without any notable actions. At first VfL has the advantage, then Mainz gets the game under control a little better.
In the final phase, Gladbach created a few more chances, but the score remained 1-1.
This means that Gladbach’s inglorious series continues. The “Fohlenelf” have not been able to win in two consecutive games for two and a half years. Mainz 05, in twelfth place in the table, holds nine points, while Gladbach is in ninth place in the table with ten points.
