Hammarby Triumphs in Chaotic Derby Against Djurgården: A Clash to Remember

After two dream goals, Nahir Besara had put Hammarby in the driver’s seat in the derby against Djurgården. A moment later the match was interrupted due to thrown bangers and rockets from the Djurgårdsklacken.

When the derby resumed 24 hours later, it was in front of empty stands. It was therefore a pressure in a class with the crowdless pandemic matches that had to frame the scandalous match that ended just 2-0 to Hammarby.

Despite this, the “bajen” players celebrated in front of the short side where the home team had been the day before.

– It should not be collective punishment, it should be individual punishment. The person who threw should be punished, says Nahir Besara to SVT Sport about playing without an audience.

With his two goals, Besara became Hammarby’s best scorer against Djurgården ever. Hammarby is now alone second in the Allsvenskan table, three points ahead of Djurgården and five points ahead of Mjällby and AIK (who, however, have played one less game). Retaining the European place is the goal.

– Now we need to protect something. It feels like we’ve been chasing something the whole time, so now we need to protect this place, says Besara.

The derby ghost lives on

Djurgården has had difficulty winning the derby, the last victory against Hammarby came in July 2022, something that weighs on both players and managers.

– The association is affected by this. It’s a burden, says Djurgård trainer Kim Bergstrand in Max’s broadcast.

Bergstrand and his coaching partner Thomas Lagerlöf have been rumored to have left the club. But he rejects that there should be any dialogue between the coaches and the club management about a dismissal.

– I have never broken a contract myself. I don’t know where those rumors come from.

Police decision

The police’s historic decision to withdraw the permit received criticism from Hammarby, among others, but Per Engström, section head of the police’s national operational department, brushed off that criticism.

– The organizer was unable to take these measures and then we unfortunately have to dissolve this event, he told SVT about the decision.

Djurgården’s CEO, Henrik Berggren, agrees that what happened was unacceptable, but he has a different view of what happened during the match meeting.

– I think that all parties involved in the match meeting agreed that the match could be continued, he says in Max.
