The Los Angeles Dodgers are up 3-0 in the World Series against the New York Yankees. They will have the chance this Tuesday to achieve the first sweep in the Major League finals in 12 years.

To date, 21 World Series sweeps have occurred. The last one was caused by the San Francisco Giants against the Detroit Tigers. In that final, Pablo Sandoval won the MVP award after four games.

The New York Yankees have been protagonists in 11 World Series sweeps. The Bronx Bombers have been swept three times. The last occasion was in the 1976 final against the Great Red Machine of the Cincinnati Reds.

There is a precedent in which the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the Yankees. It happened in the 1963 World Series, with the Los Angeles team led by Sandy Koufax and they dominated a team of Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Yogi Berra.

For their part, the Yankees have led to eight World Series sweeps. In addition, they have been the only team to achieve it in consecutive years and on three occasions.

They achieved it for the first time with consecutive titles in 1927 and 1928. They then repeated back-to-back in 1938 and 1939. The last time they achieved it was in 1998 and 1999, the dynasty dominated by Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Torre .

Yankees go for the unthinkable in World Series

No team in the history of the World Series has managed to reverse an 0-3 deficit. In the entire postseason, only one team has managed to lift a series after being on the brink of elimination.

Boston defeated the Yankees in the 2004 Championship Series after being down 0-3. The Houston Astros managed to tie a 3-3 series in 2020 against the Tampa Bay Rays, but ended up losing in Game 7.

Tonight, the Yankees will seek to avoid a sweep, the fourth in their history. While the Dodgers want to repeat the history they achieved in 1963.
