HS roundup: Soccer, field hockey, volleyball, badminton

Daniel Reiss scored off an assist from Rafael Rahmanan to lead No. 8 Great Neck North to a 1-0 win over No. 9 Valley Stream Central in the first round of the Nassau Class AA boys soccer playoffs on Tuesday. Everett Bailey made five saves. Great Neck North (11-5-1) will visit No. 1 Garden City in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Friday. Valley Stream Central finished 5-4-7.

New Hyde Park 3, Hewlett 2: Tyler Lopez and Usman Iqbal each had a goal and an assist to lead No. 5 New Hyde Park over No. 12 Hewlett in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Lucas Campuzano added a goal. New Hyde Park (10-5-2) will visit No. 4 Manhasset in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. on Friday. Hewlett finished 9-8-1.

South Side 2, Baldwin 0: Michael Benfante and Mike Forker each scored a goal to lead No. 6 South Side over No. 14 Baldwin in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Gavin McDaid made four saves. South Side (13-3-1) will face No. 3 Jericho in the quarterfinals on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Baldwin finished 6-9-4.

MONDAY’S GAME

Bethpage 2, Island Trees 1: Antoni Kulak scored the winning goal in the 70th minute and had an assist to lead No. 7 Bethpage over No. 10 Island Trees in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs. Leo Cataldo added a goal. Bethpage (8-7-1) will visit No. 2 North Shore in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Island Trees finished the season 5-8-2.

GIRLS SOCCER

Calhoun 2, Bellmore JFK 0: Elle Napoli scored off a cross from Samantha Curcio late in the first half and Jia Bello scored off an assist from Curcio’s cousin, Sabrina, halfway through the second half to lead No. 4 Calhoun over No. 13 Bellmore JFK in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Abby Da Silva made five saves.

Calhoun (2-11-3) will face the winner of No. 5 Long Beach/No. 12 New Hyde Park in the quarterfinals on Friday. Samantha Lapidus made 14 saves for Bellmore JFK (3-6-4).

Manhasset 2, Carey 0: Joy D’Angelo and Sophie Mineroff each scored a goal and Sophia Grullon made five saves to lead No. 8 Manhasset over No. 9 Carey in the first round of the Nassau Class AA playoffs. Lila Kalargiros and Liana Cvecic each had an assist. Manhasset (4-7-3) will visit No. 1 Garden City in the quarterfinals on Friday. Carey finished 7-2-5.

FIELD HOCKEY

Whitman 3, Connetquot 1: Kate Macaluso scored two goals and Jessica Cristello added a goal to lead Whitman (8-6) in Suffolk I. Sydney Elizalde scored a goal and Addison Iocca made 10 saves for Connetquot (6-7-1).

MONDAY’S GAME

New Hyde Park 2, Oyster Bay 0: Eileen O’Shea and Bridget Allen each scored a goal to lead New Hyde Park (7-6-1) in Nassau II. Emily Sepcaru had an assist. Sophia Guerrero made seven saves for Oyster Bay (5-8).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Sachem North 3, East Islip 0: Sam Morreale totaled 21 kills and two blocks and Bryan Kuhl tallied 36 assists, two aces and four digs to lead Sachem North (10-3) to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 win in Suffolk I.

MONDAY’S GAMES

Hicksville 3, Levittown District 2: Dan Winn had 22 kills, Asher Joo had 55 assists and Landon Luttrell had 21 kills and 22 digs to lead Hicksville (11-2) to a 25-21, 23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-10 win in Nassau I-B.

Valley Stream North 3, Calhoun 2: Samuel Onuoha had 25 kills and five blocks and Mark de Prado added 25 kills to lead Valley Stream North (9-4) to a 20-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 15-10 win in Nassau II. Nick Lang added 15 kills and five blocks and Erik Ziemblicki had 66 assists, four aces and six kills.

Herricks 3, Bellmore JFK 1: Violet Worms had 19 kills and 15 digs to lead Herricks (7-5) to a 26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18 win in Nassau II. Ellia Zhang had four aces and Samantha McCloskey had 43 assists and three aces.

Uniondale 3, Freeport 2: Zahara Santyl had 11 kills to lead Uniondale (7-8) to a 25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 15-10 win in Nassau IV. Katia Gomez had 15 assists and nine aces.

BOYS BADMINTON

MONDAY’S GAMES

Syosset 6, Herricks 1: Brendan Jiang’s 21-14, 21-16 victory over Shawn Tharaken at third singles clinched No. 4 Syosset’s win over No. 5 Herricks in the quarterfinals of the Nassau playoffs. Syosset (8-7) will visit No. 1 Jericho in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Herricks finished 7-8.

Great Neck South 7, Wheatley 0: Conner Shea and Max Goodman defeated Hayden Wang and Aaron Shin, 21-14, 21-7, at fourth doubles in No. 3 Great Neck South’s win over No. 6 Wheatley in quarterfinals of the Nassau playoffs. Great Neck South (11-4) will visit No. 2 Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Wheatley finished 3-11.
