Prosecutors in a Seoul court are demanding four years in prison for South Korean professional soccer player Ui-jo Hwang. The striker from Turkish club Alanyaspor is accused of filming sexual intercourse with two women against their will, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.
At the beginning of the trial in the Seoul District Court, Hwang denied the allegations. Now he pleaded guilty to all charges during the final hearing. “I sincerely apologize to all those who were hurt by my unlawful actions,” said the 32-year-old, who won 62 caps for South Korea and was part of the World Cup squad at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Hwang scored 19 goals for his country.
The case became public last summer. Hwang initially filed a blackmail complaint against his older brother’s wife after she shared intimate footage of the soccer player with other women on social media. During the investigation, the police eventually found evidence of Hwang’s crimes and took him into custody.
The former South Korean international was under contract with the English first division club Nottingham Forest until the summer. The verdict is expected to be announced on December 18th.
