“I shouldn’t have done that”

“I shouldn’t have done that”

It was an eventful year for Wout van Aert, even more so than the outside world realized. Because in between his moments of bad luck he also participated in The Masked Singer.

Betrayed on Strava

Last week, Van Aert was revealed as ‘Squirrel‘, something we got a hint at some time ago. At the end of May, the Kempen resident had posted a ride on Strava with the image of a squirrel as the title. After his performance about two weeks ago, fans of the program and/or Van Aert immediately found out this information.

“Yes, maybe I shouldn’t have done that. Because one plus one equals two,” Van Aert laughs about this at HLN. “I was blown away by how fanatically some people started digging into all the details. But at that moment I didn’t know to what extent the tips in the episode would be clear, so I thought it would be nice to add that.”

“I thought: no one knows what it is about. When I say something on Strava, I usually make it as abstract as possible, that’s a hobby that got out of hand.” Something that cycling fans obviously already know. Now it suddenly appeared to contribute to his unmasking in The Masked Singer.

“But on Friday evening, literally an hour after the broadcast, I already received the first message about what I had posted on May 29. Then it dawned on me that some people were already targeting my social media channels. I had underestimated that impact.”

One-off cameo

By the way, we should not expect any further performances from Van Aert regarding music or singing. “No, I knew in advance: I was going to do this once, but I really have no ambition to sing on stage. I think it’s a super cool program, whoever came up with this is a smart person.”

“But other TV recordings that are occasionally stopped and where you have to redo everything so many times, that doesn’t suit who I am. I am more straight forward and pure, it has to move forward. But it was a fun adventure,” Van Aert concludes his passage in alter ego Eekhoorn.
