II Liga Thrills: Penafiel’s Last-Minute Heartbreak Against Alverca with 90+12 Penalty

A coup de theater in Alverca where Penafiel saw a victory slip through their fingers with a penalty converted by the Ribatejos at 90+12 which dictated a 2-2 draw, in a match on the 8th round of the II League. The team led by Hélder Cristóvão, still undefeated, remains in first place in the standings, but has just two points more than Tondela and Benfica B.

The team from Douro started winning on their visit to Ribatejo, with Gabriel Barbosa opening the scoring in the 24th minute, but Alverca equalized soon after, in the 30th minute, with a goal from Anthony Carter.

In the second half, in the 62nd minute, the visitors regained the advantage, with a goal from Zé Leite and Penafiel seemed set for their sixth victory of the season, but Alverca would still have a say.

After many balls pumped into the Penafiel area, the referee ended up awarding a penalty, at 90+10, for a flooded cut on captain João Miguel’s arm. Anthony Carter, from the eleven meter mark, scored twice in the game and claimed a point for the home team that continues to fail to win at home.

With this draw, Penafiel, still without defeats (5 wins and 3 draws), has just two points more than Tondela and Benfica B, but with the Seixal team still one game behind.
