It was revealed that the Korea Badminton Association has been operating international referees according to the president’s preference.

Representative Kim Yun-deok (Jeonbuk, Jeonju City) of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee pointed out the chaos in the Badminton Association’s international referee operations at a government audit held for the Korea Sports Council and others on the 22nd and called for an audit at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

It is generally accepted that international referees play a very important role in determining the outcome of a game.

It is true that we have witnessed countless national team players shed tears due to biased decisions by referees at the Olympics and World Championships, and each time such cases have occurred, the public has demanded the importance of sports diplomacy, including the training of international referees.

According to Representative Kim Yun-deok, the French Badminton Association invited a Korean international referee to the ‘French Open’, which also served as a test for the ‘Paris Olympics’, in January, but the Korea Badminton Association rejected the invitation.

The referee in question was the only Korean among the 26 referees from around the world at the Paris Olympics, and was scheduled to become the first Korean referee at the Olympics in 12 years.

When the referee asked the association why, he was told, “Of course the referee committee approved the dispatch, but the association decided not to dispatch the referee. The president cut it.”

In the end, the badminton referee had to act as an Olympic referee without being fully familiar with the stadium conditions in advance, and was unable to participate in the higher level competitions, only participating in the two lowest level ‘Tour 100’ competitions.

In addition, in another case revealed by Rep. Kim, official documents requesting Korean international referees were ignored and not allowed in games held in Asia, such as the 2023 Taiwan Open and the 2024 Vietnam Open, as well as the Badminton Association sending an official letter to the Asian federation, saying, “In the future, We will not accept invitations from named Asian federations. We do not want the Asian Federation to decide who to send. “From now on, please do not nominate specific referees in your invitations,” he replied.

Rep. Kim pointed out that it was a notification saying, “In short, they will dispatch international judges according to their preference.”

He went on to emphasize, “Having an international referee is a very important factor that determines the victory or defeat of our players when they play international games.” He added, “The Badminton Association’s dogmatism is truly astounding. If this is true, isn’t the president a traitor to Korean badminton?” He criticized.

Rep. Kim Yun-deok asked, “The president of the Badminton Association also controls the international referees, who play a critical role in the players’ international matches, as he pleases, so what about the players?” and added, “The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Council operate referees such as international referees and standing referees of the Badminton Association. He ordered, “Understand the overall problems and come up with improvement plans, and come up with an audit plan to find out those who blocked the dispatch of international referees, those who created ridiculous official documents and sent them to the Asian Federation, and those responsible.”
