Japan is not giving up. According to information from L’Esprit du judo, relayed by the French sports daily L’Équipe, the Japanese Judo Federation is looking for a solution to hope to be able to beat the Frenchman Teddy Riner. For this, the governing body would like to reintroduce an old rule, banned by the International Federation for more than fifteen years, in order to have more chances, in this +100 kg ultra category dominated by the legend of French sport. Among the heavyweights, the Japanese are therefore very regularly in failure, since the arrival, in particular, of the Frenchman on the circuit. In 2021, Kokoro Kageura had indeed won the world title, in the +100 kg category. This had not happened in Japan, in this category, since 2003. In the meantime, Riner had become the most successful judoka in the history of the world championships, with no less than eleven coronations, without forgetting also a silver medal. .

Riner still unbeatable in Paris

In recent years, the Frenchman has missed numerous editions of the World Cup, but, despite this, Japan has not taken over. Japanese judokas have been trying to reverse the trend for several years now, while this summer, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (July 26 – August 11), the Olympic title escaped them, since it was Riner who won. was crowned again, very easily, in front of his audience. During the team event, still against Japan, the Frenchman also brought the decisive point to his country, during the final which was nevertheless poorly started. This famous rule that Japan would like to see come back has not existed since 2007. It concerned attacks on the legs, with the hands, and under certain conditions, today prohibited by the regulations of the International Federation. According to the Spirit of Judo and L’Équipe, she could make her comeback during the next Japanese national championship, the Zen Nihon. Before a return to the international scene?
