José Mourinho was back in his element. The coach of Fenerbahçe Istanbul is angry after a missed penalty in the Europa League against Manchester United and sees the red card. After the game, he gave an interview that was, even for him, exaggeratedly sarcastic.
José Mourinho stood in the stands with a stone-faced expression, probably wondering how he actually got there. Finally, down on the lawn, his team Fenerbahçe Istanbul was playing against Manchester United in the Europa League. The explanation seems simple at first glance: The Portuguese star coach was visibly upset during his club’s 1-1 (0-1) draw against the English after a missed penalty in the second half and was sent off by the French referee Clement Turpin .
But Mourinho wouldn’t be “The Special One” if he didn’t have his own way of looking at things. He made this known after the final whistle in an interview that was, even by his standards, excessively sarcastic. When asked about his sending off, Istanbul’s coach initially replied that he didn’t want to talk about it. But his look revealed: Mourinho wanted nothing more than to talk about it.
So the reporter asked and wanted to know what Mourinho and the referee team had talked about after the final whistle. “He told me something unbelievable,” Mourinho began with a sarcastic tone. “He said he could see what was happening in the penalty area and my behavior on the sideline at the same time.” Then his poisonous compliment became a little more bitter. “I congratulate him because he is truly incredible. His peripheral vision: During the game, which ran at 100 miles per hour, he kept an eye on the penalty situation and keep an eye on the bench and my behavior.”
It was easy to see that Mourinho had serious doubts that Turpin had such powers of observation. He himself played the perplexed person and followed up again. “That’s the explanation the referee gave me. That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world.”
Mourinho celebrates his team’s point
At least the Turks secured a point with a goal from Youssef En-Nesyri (49th). The English took the lead in the first round through Christian Eriksen (10th). Mourinho was correspondingly satisfied with his team’s performance. “If we play like this in the Turkish league, we will destroy every team,” he told TNT Sports.
Fenerbahçe has five points after three games in the Europa League, while Manchester only has three points after three draws. Mourinho won the Europa League with the English record champions in 2017.
