Continental competition held on October 5 and 6. event that had the participation of 9 nations and 120 athletes in the absolute category.

Chile was represented by the only Chilean in competition: Gustavo Zepeda García in the category up to 100 kg. After beating the host country of the event (Dominican Republic) in the semifinal of the event, he secured his fight to the final against Colombia.

Zepeda was crowned champion 26 seconds into the final fight. Victory achieved by a powerful lever in the embrace of the Colombian and achieving his surrender.

Gustavo Zepeda García pointed out that “I have quite a few mixed emotions, a week ago I achieved bronze in the national games and it was a very bitter victory in my career, but I said it in the same event, this Pan American open would mean my revenge and that’s how it was” .

“I am very happy for the support of the Chilean judo community, who throughout the event were attentive and sending me messages of encouragement and support. Because it is something very nice how the entire community comes together to support an athlete no matter what part of Chile they are from or what club they come from. The judo people in Chile are tremendous,” said the athlete.

“I also want to thank all the people who make up my Fujiyama club. And directives, coaching staff, athletes, representatives. Without their unconditional support, this medal would never have been possible,” commented Zepeda.

Finally, the jucoca thanked his family, “who have always been there for all these sporting challenges for 17 years now,” the athlete concluded.
