The NFL is playing more and more international games. Now another country can be happy.
Good news for American football fans in Ireland! According to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the first game on the island will take place “soon”.
The 65-year-old took part in a live NFL event as part of the London Games. When asked about this by NFL Ireland’s Michael McQuaid, Goodell said: “I have a lot of respect and admiration (for Ireland, editor’s note). I know the Steelers really want to go there too. I have no doubt that we will play in Ireland. I don’t know if it will be next year, but it will come soon.”
The best football league in the world has continually expanded its portfolio of international games in recent years. While the game initially only took place in London, in 2024 it will also be played in Germany and Brazil.
Next season there will also be a game in the Spanish capital Madrid for the first time. Regular season games have already been played in Mexico.
In the past, Goodell had repeatedly said that more and more games should be played in other countries. If the number increases, the chances of the game being played in Dublin, Ireland also increase.
Just recently, NFL employees were on site to conduct a feasibility study on hosting a game. It is currently still unclear which stadium would be used for this.
By the way, the fact that the Steelers absolutely want to play in Ireland has a historical background. In 1997, the franchise played its first and only NFL game on Irish soil.
However, the match against the Chicago Bears was not a regular season game, but a preseason game.
