As the 2024/25 NBA season begins this evening, the franchises had until last night to extend the players drafted in the first round of the 2021 Draft. And as usual, things got agitated at the buzzer…
Upstream, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto and Orlando had respectively locked Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes et Franz Wagner with max contracts.
For the rest of the vintage, it was much more vague, even if the Pelicans and the Warriors had managed to come to an agreement with Trey Murphy III et Moses Moody a few hours before the end of the negotiation window.
But ultimately, and while optimism was not really in order, Jalen Johnson also managed to find common ground with the Hawks, as did Corey Kispert to the Wizards and Jalen Suggs at the Magic. The biggest surprise came from Houston, which locked down Jalen Green and above all Alperen Sengunwho lands a five-year contract, with a “player option” for the last year!
The Turk is the first player to negotiate a lease of this type, following his rookie contract, since Luka Doncic and Trae Young. This shows how keen the Rockets were to cement the long-term future of the pivot.
Among the main non-extended players, there is of course Jonathan Kumingaabout which the Warriors still have no certainty, while the person concerned is aiming for a maximum contract. In Chicago and Brooklyn, we preferred to be patient with Josh Giddey et Cam Thomasand wait until next summer to determine the value of the two players.
