Latvian basketball team “Rīgas Zeļļi” forward Krišs Helmanis has revealed that he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2022. In a conversation with the online magazine TVNET+, the 22-year-old basketball player shared more about his experience – what kind of lifestyle changes does this disease introduce in the daily life of a professional athlete and how he manages to overcome the difficulties associated with it.
Helmanis talked about his experience with diabetes and also explained how he controls it in his professional sports career. He also told how teammates and coaches reacted to the diagnosis, as well as commented on the search for a new team with the disease.
