The Arab League hopes for an early breakthrough in efforts to bring about a ceasefire in Lebanon. This is what the Secretary General of the international organization said, Ahmed Abul Ghaitduring a visit to Beirut in front of journalists. The top priority is one immediate ceasefire and the election of a president in the country, Gheit said after a conversation with parliament speaker Nabih Berri, a close Hezbollah ally. The office of head of state in Lebanon has been vacant for around two years. The government is only in office on an executive basis.
The Arab League has 22 members, including the Palestinian territories. In addition to predominantly Arabic-speaking countries, Somalia and Djibouti and the Comoros also belong to the Arab League.
