After a postponed match and a retention in the Top 12 already acquired, the Conquerors of Caen (Calvados) were finally able to start their season this Saturday October 5, 2024. They were going to Fos-sur-Mer to face the French champion with, among his ranks, the brothers Christo (27th in the world) and Toma Junior Popov (19ᵉ mondial). Milo Duboiswho arrived at the club in 2023, talks about his experience of these first clashes. He won Caen’s only point in men’s doubles and faced Toma Junior Popov in mixed doubles 1.

You arrived almost two years ago within the Conquerors. Where did you play before? What is your specialty?

I played in Dives-sur-Mer. And I mainly specialize in doubles and mixed doubles too. In any case, that’s what I did last year and I think it will continue on this path.

So you knew Alex Lanier (22nd in the world)?

Yes, he was my partner when I was little. He’s three years younger than me I think, but as he was always outclassed, I had the opportunity to play with him a lot.

How did your integration into this team go?

It was great, I get on well with everyone and the atmosphere with the club is really good. Here again, this weekend, despite the fact that it is complicated sportingly.

Did knowing that you were already maintained allow you to play a little more liberated?

Yes, obviously, it takes a weight off us, whether for the club or the players. It allows us to gain experience and be more free during matches.

“It’s nice to hook players like that”

What state of mind were you in heading into this meeting in Fos-sur-Mer?

In terms of mentality, we haven’t changed much. We always wanted to be combative in all matches, even against the French champion. Whatever happens, we always give our best.

You win in men’s doubles. How did you feel after this victory which is also the only Caen victory of the eight matches?

It’s true that it’s the only victory. Afterwards, we fought well in certain matches where we went for three sets. We bothered them as much as possible and the atmosphere and combativeness were good. It’s always cool to win a match and bring your team a point.

You also played mixed doubles against Toma Junior Popov. How was it?

Honestly, I loved the atmosphere on the pitch. What’s also good is that the Popov brothers are all in, no matter the opponent. They still have this mentality and it shows a certain respect and commitment on their part. Plus, we hung on them quite a bit in the second set until 18-16, so obviously, it’s nice to hang on to players like that.

The results

Double Mixte 2 : Christo Popov, Julie Finne-Ipsen – Romain Eudeline, Weronika Gorniak (21-12 ; 21-11).

What is your long term goal?

I think that for the whole club, it’s about finding our feet a little in the top 12, because it’s a first. Also gain experience for us players and help stabilize the club at this level. Whether it’s progression, public funding, etc. Try to do as much as possible to catch the opponents.

The next upcoming meeting of CBCC will take place on Saturday October 26, 2024 against the Racing Club of France, once again outside.
