Lots of chances, no goals: Hoffenheim unfortunately loses in Porto

As of: October 24, 2024 10:54 p.m

TSG Hoffenheim lost to FC Porto in the third group game of the Europa League. And that despite the fact that TSG had significantly more chances, especially in the first half.

Bitter for TSG Hoffenheim: Despite a strong performance, Hoffenheim lost 0-2 (0-1) at FC Porto on Thursday (October 24th, 2024). Among other things, Jacob Bruun Larsen had two chances to make it 1-0 for TSG. However, both goals came for the hosts: after a standard by Tiago Djaló (45th minute + 2) and by a strong shot at the near corner by Samu Omorodion (75th).

Hoffenheim’s strong first half is not rewarded

Purely in terms of play, the first half at the Estadio do Dragao clearly went to the guests from Hoffenheim. And also the first chance of the game: After a corner from Tom Bischof, Bruun Larsen headed the ball just past the right post (12th minute). The best, but also the only, chance in the first quarter of an hour went to Hoffenheim.

Even after that, TSG’s chances didn’t stop: Anton Stach’s shot on goal was deflected (16th), another chance ended up in the hands of Porto’s Diogo Costa (17th). Porto’s first shot (20′) was blocked by Stach and the following corner couldn’t get past the compact Hoffenheim defense. In the 24th minute there was the next huge chance for Hoffenheim. After a deep pass from Bischof to Bruun Larsen, he only had the Portuguese goalkeeper in front of him. But his lob missed the far corner.

Undeserved lead for Porto shortly before half-time

The next chance for Hoffenheim came shortly before the break: Adam Hložek beat two opponents in the penalty area and shot from eleven meters (44′). However, the ball went just over the goal. And then things got really bitter for TSG: After a yellow card for Stanley Nsoki, Porto received a free kick in stoppage time in the first half. Tiago Djaló converted this directly into the left corner (45th + 2). Unsustainable for Oliver Baumann.

TSG Hoffenheim went into the break after a strong first half and an undeserved goal from the hosts.

Second chance for Porto leads to 2-0

The Hoffenheim team came out of the locker room unchanged, but didn’t play as well as in the first half. However, Porto allowed significantly less. TSG’s first good finish of the second half came in the 61st minute: Nsoki passed it to Hložek in the penalty area, but his left-footed shot flew wide of the goal.

Despite a few changes and a breath of fresh air at Hoffenheim, the result was 2-0 for FC Porto. After a high ball, the previously very strong Stach was overrun by Samu. He then shot to the near corner and scored to make it 2-0. Goalkeeper Baumann hesitated before running out and was unable to prevent the goal being conceded. And so a strong game for Hoffenheim came to an end with TSG’s first defeat of the current Europa League season.
