Los Angeles (dpa) – Freddie Freeman made history in a furious first game of the World Series, the finals of Major League Baseball (MLB). In his Los Angeles Dodgers‘ 6-3 win against the New York Yankees, the 35-year-old hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.

This means that when he hit a home run in the final inning, all three bases were occupied by teammates who were able to walk alongside Freeman to home plate, scoring four points. Since the opponent then had no chance of scoring enough runs, the game ended immediately and the defending team left the field.

After the regular nine innings it was 2-2, and in the extra inning the Dodgers were down by one run – until Freeman came and turned the game around on the last-chance play.

The second game is scheduled for Saturday, also in Los Angeles. Four wins are needed to win the title.
