Matte Smets did not appear in the selection during the previous international round. Shortly afterwards he received an invitation to train with the Red Devils. The Bilzenaar is now completely part of it. Whether he gets a chance to play against Italy or France remains to be seen.
“Matte Smets deserves his selection,” the national coach said at his press chat in Rome. “He is doing excellently at Racing Genk. We want to see him at work ourselves. On video or from the stands it is different than when you have a player with you.”
Domenico Tedesco also called up Zeno Debast (Sporting CP), Wout Faes (Leicester City), Koni De Winter (Genoa) and Sebastiaan Bornauw (Wolfsburg) at the center back. Arthur Theate (Eintracht Frankfurt) can also play in that position.
