Injuries to their professionals cost the five top European football leagues a lot of money last season.
According to insurance company Howden, which has issued a report for the fourth time, clubs in the German <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/01/premier-league-manchester-citys-turnover-for-the-first-time-higher-than-manchester-uniteds/" title="Premier League – Manchester City's turnover for the first time higher than Manchester United's”>Bundesliga, the English Premier League, the Spanish LaLiga, the Italian Serie A and the French Ligue 1 had to pay a total of 732 million euros in salaries for players, while they were missing injured.
According to the Howden report, 4,123 injuries were registered across the five leagues, four percent more than in the 2022/23 season and 37 percent more than in 2020/21. The worst affected was the German Bundesliga, where a professional was injured every 52 minutes of play. In the five top leagues together this value was 92 minutes.
Knee injuries, the most common cause of failure, were the most expensive for the clubs at 141 million euros. According to the report, serious injuries to U21 players in the Premiere League have increased dramatically. Last season, the average length of absence for young players was 44 days, compared to 26.5 days the previous season.
