New York City FC is a professional football team in Major League Soccer. The team’s home stadium is Yankee Stadium located in the Bronx, New York City. In September 2024, New York City Football Club officially released the updated team logo, marking the club’s entry into a new and vibrant era.
This update continues the overall visual identity system launched by New York City Football Club earlier this year, while further improving the original team logo. The new design not only retains the iconic elements that have made the club so popular with fans over the past decade, it has also been carefully tweaked and improved to maintain its original design direction.
During the process of updating the team logo, New York City Football Club maintained close communication and cooperation with fans. During the discussion, fans agreed that any changes should be true to the iconic brand elements of the club since its inception and continue to retain the characteristics that fans have come to know and love.
In the new team logo, the redrawn “NYC” letter combination becomes thicker and more closely connected with the surrounding “New York City Football Club” words. The outer light blue and orange rings are also thickened, making the letters clearer and easier to read. Subtle adjustments to color increase overall contrast, making the distinction between light and dark more obvious. In addition, the change also allows the club to introduce a modular logo system covering monograms, wordmarks and multiple combination designs to highlight the “NYC” letter icon.
The club’s main colors remain part of the core identity, but have been tweaked to make them more distinct and bright. We also drew inspiration from the vibrant environment and symbolism of New York City, introducing a secondary color palette to further enrich the visual layering.
THE MOSAIC: New York City itself is a collection of countless stories, cultures, and backgrounds that together create a whole that is greater than the sum of its individuals. The club’s mosaic pattern was inspired by this idea, behind a single jigsaw design of the streets of New York City’s five boroughs.
Font: The club specially invited famous font designers Tobias Frere-Jones and Nina Stössinger to design exclusive fonts. Inspired by the unique glyphs of New York City’s pre-merger subways, these fonts fully reflect the city’s history and personality.
Icon system: The new font system is also accompanied by an icon system, designed to capture the energy and spirit of this world sport played in the world city and enhance the visual expression of the brand.
Milo Kowalski, senior creative director at New York City FC, said: “The old version of the club’s logo will always be a part of our history, but we are very excited about the design of the new version. These logos inspired people to think about this football team. The core elements of the logo have not changed substantially: our ‘NYC’ monogram remains the focal point in a blue and orange circle, with the club’s name still surrounding it, it’s just that it’s now more distinctive than before. Bold and confident, ready to lead us into a future full of ambition and hope.”
Fans will gradually see this updated team logo in stadium-related images, and a larger-scale promotion is expected to begin in the 2025 season.
