Los New York Knicks they fired the point guard Landry Shametsources told ESPN on Saturday.

The decision comes days after Landry Shamet27, dislocated his right shoulder trying to make a defensive play in a preseason game Tuesday. He hopes to be able to rehabilitate the injury without having to undergo surgery.

Before the injury, Landry Shametwho averaged 10.8 points in 22 minutes per game in the preseason and has shot 38.4% from three-point range in his six-year career, was a sure bet to make the Knicks roster.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau spoke highly of the point guard several times during training camp, highlighting ways he would fit with the club. In particular, Thibodeau said he valued Shamet’s previous experience playing with Mikal Bridges and Cameron Payne, both of whom joined the Knicks this summer.

Because the Knicks are $3.6 million short of the second tax, they will likely begin the season with 12 players on standard contracts. The Knicks can have fewer than 14 players on their roster, but no more than 28 total days during the regular season and 14 consecutive days at a time.

New York will be allowed to bring Shamet back during the regular season.
