NFL: Browns have no plans to replace Deshaun Watson with Jameis Winston

Despite a dismal start to the season from an offensive standpoint and a 1-4 record, the Cleveland Browns intend to continue with Deshaun Watson at quarterback.

The Browns are the only offensive unit in the NFL that has still not amassed at least 300 yards in a single game in this 2024 schedule.

“We’re not changing quarterbacks,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said Sunday after the Browns lost 34-13 to the Washington Commanders.

“We have to play better. I have to coaches better,” he stressed.

Posting a poor efficiency of 1 in 13 on third down in front of the Commanders, the Browns totaled only 212 offensive yards in this third consecutive loss.

Watson completed 15 of his 28 pass attempts for 125 yards and a touchdown, before being replaced by backup Jameis Winston for the final series of the game.

Against Washington, Watson was the victim of seven sacks. He ranks first on the Goodell circuit in this regard, having been the victim of 26 sacks.

“The offense will go as far as I take it,” Watson said. So at the end of the day, we’re not doing enough offensively. As a quarterback, you take all the pressure, all the blame. I have to find ways to unlock everyone’s potential, to minimize the mistakes that lead to our downfall right now,” summarized the former Houston Texans.

Cleveland has scored under 20 points in its five outings this campaign. It’s the Browns’ longest streak to start a season since 1999.

The 1-4 record is Ohio’s worst since Stefanski took over as coach in 2020.

On Sunday, Stefanski said no discussions have taken place to determine whether he will continue to call the Browns’ offensive plays.

“It’s not the problem of one person attacking,” he said. We have the right people in place. We have the coaches. We will find the solutions. »
