NFL: Jameis Winston promoted to starting position by the Browns

Jameis Winston will be the Cleveland Brownsstarting quarterback on Sunday, sources confirm to Kimberley A. Martin ofESPN.

Winston was promoted to the starting job after the Browns’ first two quarterbacks – Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson – were injured in Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters earlier this week that he wasn’t going to decide who his starting quarterback would be until he received a medical update from Thompson-Robinson, who was injured in a finger of his hand with which he throws.

Winston, a 10-year veteran, gives Cleveland an option with more experience than Thompson-Robinson for Sunday’s game against their AFC North rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. The former Heisman Trophy winner said Sunday he’s “prepared for whatever role” the Browns give him.

“That’s been the story of my career over the last few years,” Winston said. I am ready and prepared for any role. I am here to serve. »

Fox Sports first reported Tuesday that Winston could be a starter for the Browns, who still face uncertainty at quarterback after an Achilles injury suffered by Watson ended his season.

Winston replaced Thompson-Robinson on Sunday’s final offensive series and orchestrated a 12-play drive that ended with a touchdown pass to David Njoku. He has started 80 games in the NFL since being selected first overall in the 2015 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Browns (1-6) have been unable to score 20 fewer in a single game this season, their longest such streak in 15 years.
