NFL – That makes sense: Bills acquire top receiver Cooper

The Buffalo Bills have one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL in Josh Allen, but the receiving corps hardly had anything notable to offer. That changed this Tuesday with the signing of Amari Cooper.

Hardly noticeable in the Cleveland Browns uniform: top receiver Amari Cooper.

32 teams play in the NFL, 31 of which have achieved 20 points in at least one of the regular season games so far. Even at this level, 20 isn’t rocket science; to put it bluntly, it should be absolutely doable.

But not for the Cleveland Browns, who, after their playoff run last season (clear loss directly against Houston), have had horror after horror on offense, are unsurprisingly last in the AFC North with their record of 1-5 and, due to their catastrophic offense, Performances have been heavily criticized.

Above all, quarterback Deshaun Watson, who head coach Kevin Stefanski wants to hold on to even after the recent 16:20 in Philadelphia and sees him as the best opportunity to win games. Jameis Winston would be available as a backup.

Cooper brings class

But no matter who plays in the following Browns games, the faceoff station named Amari Cooper will no longer be found. The 30-year-old wide receiver, who only has 250 yards and two touchdowns after six games, has said goodbye.

After his NFL start between 2015 and 2018 with the Raiders, the subsequent move to the Cowboys and the trade to Cleveland in 2022 (two 1,000-yard seasons to date), the veteran has now signed with his fourth team – the Buffalo Bills .

And it doesn’t take a prophet to see that this deal makes sense for both parties. On the one hand, the Bills from the AFC East are very well in the race with a record of 4-2 after their recent 23:20 loss to the New York Jets (2-4). On the other hand, star quarterback Josh Allen (1,160 yards, 13 total touchdowns, no interceptions), who is on course for MVP, lacked an elite receiver this season – including after the departure of Stefon Diggs (Houston Texans).

And Cooper, who should now have more fun personally again, can deliver that. The veteran already has an impressive 691 catches, 9,736 yards and 62 touchdowns in 146 regular-season appearances. A few more are likely to follow. So far in the Bills team, the passing stations Khalil Shakir (249 yards, two TDs), Dalton Kincaid (217 yards, one TD) and Keon Coleman (201 yards, two TDs) have divided the work neatly.

Cooper, who came in a package with a sixth-round pick for next year’s NFL Draft, cost the Bills a third-round pick for 2025 and a seventh-round pick for 2026. Buffalo also released Marquez Valdes-Scantling (30) to be on the roster to make room.
