PREMATCH

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are 3-0 after signing each of their victories in the last minute of play.

If recent history is anything to go by, Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers should produce a similar result.

Although the Chiefs have a five-game winning streak against their AFC West rivals, seven of the 10 meetings between Mahomes and the Chargers have been decided by a touchdown or less.

The Chiefs beat Baltimore and Cincinnati on the last play of each game. Last week, Nick Bolton stopped Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson in a fourth-down situation to seal a 22-17 victory.

“Offensively, we have to help the defense buy time or score a touchdown to put the game out of reach,” said Mahomes, who will start for the 100th time in the regular season on Sunday.

Kansas City’s last four victories on the Chargers’ home field have been decided late, including in overtime in 2020 and 2021. Last season, the Chiefs won Week 18 by a score of 13-12 thanks to a Harrison Butker field goal with 48 seconds remaining.

Mahomes did not play in that game to prepare for the playoffs, while Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was out with a finger injury.

The Chargers (2-1) will look to bounce back from last week’s 20-10 loss at Pittsburgh. Herbert is nursing a sprained left ankle for a second straight week, but is expected to play.

Herbert made his first career NFL start against the Chiefs and is 2-5 against them.

This game is also a new opportunity for Jim Harbaugh to show that the Chargers are progressing in his first season in charge.

If Los Angeles wants to claim a spot at the top of the AFC West, the team must be better within the division. From 2013 to 2023, the Chargers recorded 23 wins and 43 losses against the Broncos, Raiders and Chiefs, which is the worst record in the division.

During that same span, Kansas City has won 17 of 22, sweeping the season series between the two clubs seven times. The Chargers haven’t swept the Chiefs since 2013.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity and we’re treating it as such,” Harbaugh said when asked if this game was a litmus test for his team.

PREMATCH

Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are about to be on the same football field for the first time in almost two years. Those surrounding them with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens are bracing themselves for another classic.

“I’m just grateful to be a part of it and to be here,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. These are things that you will remember and tell yourself that it was cool to be there. »

Allen’s Bills and Jackson’s Ravens renew a premier rivalry in the NFL on Sunday night. The two AFC title contenders are still chasing the two-time defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, but they have had very different starts to the season.

The Bills (3-0) are still undefeated after three games while the Ravens (1-2) have just gotten back on track after starting the campaign with two losses.

This is another opportunity for the two elite quarterbacks to fuel the spectacle and make the doubters look bad again.

Jackson is the reigning Most Valuable Player, having received the honor on two occasions, and his 254 rushing yards currently rank high for quarterbacks this season. He’s now paired with Derrick Henry, who rushed for 151 yards last week in a 28-25 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

The Bills’ offense also performed well, after dismantling the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 47-10 win Monday night. Allen threw seven touchdown passes for 634 yards, adding 85 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He has still not been the victim of an interception after establishing the worst total of his career in this regard (18) last year.
