Nicolas Kunze is German judo champion!

The German Judo Championships took place in Stuttgart last weekend. Nicolas Kunze from MTSV Aerzen won in the class up to 66kg. With this, Kunze has fulfilled a big dream and reached an important milestone in his sports career. He has also consolidated his position in the A squad of men’s national athletes.

After two confident performances in the main round against Felix Bächle from Heidelberg and Robin Angerer from TSG Backnang, it was almost over in the quarterfinals against Johann Vogt from Potsdam after a minute of fighting time, because the Aerzener fell behind due to carelessness. Kunze then risked significantly more, so that his opponent could only defend, which led to several punishments and enabled Kunze to reach the semi-finals.

Here he had to deal with the defending champion David Ickes from Budokan Lübeck. The expectedly exciting fight was an endurance duel with over 20 minutes of fighting time, in which the opponents gave each other nothing with similar fighting style and techniques. In the end, punishing his opponent led to victory here too. “That was a really extraordinary fight that lasted five times longer than the normal fight time,” even Aerzen’s judo division leader Ralf Guhl was amazed. In judo, if there is a tie, there will be no time limit until the decision is made. Guhl: “This showed that both fighters are absolutely physically fit and can handle this effort. The decision was more of a mental matter with Nicolas having a stronger will.”

In the final against Lino Andrea Dello Russo from SSF Bonn the decision was again made in extra time. Here Kunze showed a beautiful throwing technique, which was rewarded with a full point “Ippon” and the German championship.

It was Nicolas Kunze’s second major success in October 2024. Previously, Nicolas and his brother Sebastian Kunze, also a first-class judo ace, achieved the German championship title in the Judo Bundesliga as part of Remscheider TV.
