BarcelonaThe allegations of sexual violence against Sumar‘s export spokesman Íñigo Errejón continue to drag on, with a crisis unleashed within the formation and with a direct impact on the Spanish government. This Sunday, Rita Maestre, spokeswoman for Més Madrid in the City Council of the Spanish capital, who was Errejón’s partner, spoke. In a public letter to X, he said that, following the information he has come across these days, he “discovered that he was returning home normally after assaulting a woman”. “I am aware that some of the incidents of misogynistic behavior and violence reported by the victims happened when the perpetrator was still my partner. A normal-looking person, a good boyfriendwas at the same time a misogynist who returned home normally after assaulting a 20-year-old girl in a hotel.”
In any case, it makes it clear that she had no record of these behaviors of violence against women or harassment, and charges against those who now present it as “obvious”. “I have not been part of nor do I have evidence of any cover-up of any aggression or violent action, because there were none – he assured in the letter -. I felt deeply deceived and the deception is devastating”, he says, describing Errejón as “manipulator”. “We are tired of feeling judged when we have been part of the personal environment of the aggressor”, he says, in addition to defending the organizations of which Errejón was a part: Más Madrid and Sumar.
The Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, has also spoken again on the case from Oman, in the Middle East, where he stopped on his way to India. In an informal conversation with journalists, he praised Sumar’s “quick action” in the face of the “painful and unpleasant” situation, especially, he said, for an executive like his, who is a champion of feminism. However, he has rejected that the Errejón case affects the stability of the coalition and has closed ranks with the management of the case that is being done by Vice President Yolanda Díaz, with whom he has maintained permanent contact on this issue. He has assured that he found out about everything through the media and that he was very surprised.
What Sánchez has been concerned about is how the space to the left of the PSOE can be articulated in the face of the next elections, taking into account the fragmentation within Sumar and the break with Podemos. “There are two and a half years until 2027; we have time”, he said, showing himself convinced that the coalition will also overcome this impasse.
PP pressure
In any case, the pressure from the right does not stop. Sánchez had to defend himself against the attacks of the PP after The World has published this Sunday a photograph from 2019 in which he and the commissioner of the Koldo plot who is in prison, Víctor de Aldama, are out. “You don’t choose who you take a picture with, but you do choose who you go on vacation with,” Sánchez replied, referring to the photograph of the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, with the drug trafficker Marcial Dorado . However, the PP has tried to use the image to continue linking the prime minister with the corruption plot. Feijóo has attacked him again in an act with the New Generations of the party, and has proposed to Sánchez “to end his ordeal, to call a press conference and to explain to all Spaniards what his relationship is with Mr. Knock”. And he added, as is usual, a request: that he “submit his resignation”.
