With a personal record in the quarter-finals in Vienna: Tokyo Olympic champion Alexander Zverev had two reasons to be happy at the ATP tournament in Austria’s capital on Wednesday.
The Hamburger won his round of 16 against US professional Marcos Giron 6:2, 7:5 and also set a career record with his 61st win of the season. Zverev thus improved his record of 60 wins in a season on the tour, which he set in 2018.
“It was a good year with ups and downs. I’m trying to find my rhythm again and end the year strong,” said Zverev after his opening win against the Austrian teenager Joel Schwärzler. The match against Giron, ranked number 48, 45 positions behind top-seeded Germany, was a further step towards this.
