Head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Wilson “might” be the starting quarterback for the Steelers (4-2) against the New York Jets (2-4) on Sunday night. The 35-year-old veteran has spent the past six weeks recovering from a calf injury he aggravated days before the team’s season opener.

Although Tomlin admitted that Justin Fields “has been very good” as Wilson’s replacement and that the team “has excelled at times,” the longest-serving head coach in the NFL added that “good should not be confused with excellent”.

This is how Wilson enters the picture. The former Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos quarterback earned the Steelers starting quarterback job at the end of training camp, before injuring his calf less than 72 hours before the first regular season duel against the Falcons in Atlanta.

Tomlin was reassured enough by Wilson in practice last week to give him the backup quarterback role behind Fields, and the Steelers beat the Raiders in Las Vegas 32-13. And now there’s a good chance the roles will be reversed against the Jets.
