  • This week the Costa Teguise Lanzarote Judo Club (CJCT) had the invaluable presence of the prestigious Olympic judoka Alberto Gaitero Martín.

Gaitero was part of the Olympic judo expedition in Tokyo and has countless sporting achievements on his resume (Grand Slam, Grand Prix, world championships…). He could not be in the recent Paris Olympics due to injury, but this week he has been visiting the island of Lanzarote and his club, the Costa Teguise Lanzarote Judo Club, of which he is part of the first team squad in the National First Division several years ago.

The head of the Teguiseño entity, Antonio Ramírez, wants to “publicly thank the judoka who gives so much for the Teguiseño club at the national level for the visit to the club and Lanzarote. Gaitero is one of the greatest on the national scene, a fact that he has been demonstrating for years on the tatami of this country. Thanks to the Cabildo and City Council of Teguise for accompanying Alberto gaitero on his visit to our headquarters and to the Radisson BLU Lanzarote Hotel and Cabrera Medina for their collaboration.”

Alberto Gaitero took part earlier this week at the CJCT headquarters in the black belt award ceremony, confirming the admiration felt by the young judokas rabbits for their person. The Sports Councilor of the Island Council, Juan Monzón Rosales, attended the event, along with the local representation, led by the Deputy Mayor and Tourism Councilor of the Teguise City Council, Rita Martín, as well as the Sports Councilor, Alejandro Ramírez Doblado.

Alberto Gaitero himself addressed those present: “The Costa Teguise Judo Club is an example of how, with effort, great challenges can be overcome. Despite the geographical barriers that double insularity implies, this club has managed to position itself among the best in Spain. We are talking about a club that has almost two decades in the National Judo Leaguecompeting in the highest category and which, recently, has been recognized as part of the national ‘top ten’. For an athlete like me, being linked to such a prestigious club is a true luxury. Being part of one of the best judo clubs in Spain is not only an honor, but it is also a source of motivation to continue improving day by day. The level of dedication and excellence that permeates this club inspires any athlete to give their best. Over the years, the Costa Teguise club has achieved impressive milestones. It has participated in competitions at the European and national level, and has achieved successes that reflect the high level of its athletes. For example, their judokas have been champions of Spain and the Canary Islands and have won medals in international competitions, which highlights the high level of their quarry. It is also important to recognize the social impact that the club hasnot only as a sports entity, but as a reference in the training of people and in supporting youth development. This is possible thanks to the continuous efforts of Antonio, his wife Mercedes and his son Alejandro, who have been at the helm of the club since its inception, with exemplary dedication and improvement. Club Costa Teguise is much more than a place to train, it is a pillar in the community. They offer a space where more than three hundred young people can develop not only sports skills, but also personal skills, through education in the values that judo provides. This contributes to forming responsible, committed citizens with a strong work ethic, something fundamental for the future of any society.”

Finally, Alberto Gaitero specifies that, “as an athlete, I can only admire and thank the work done in this club. Thanks to them, many children and young people have found a passion in judo and have learned lessons that will serve them for a lifetime, on and off the mat. I am sure that, with this level of dedication and effort, they will continue to achieve great success in the years to come.”

In short, it is wonderful news for the Costa Teguise Lanzarote Judo Club and, ultimately, for the island’s sport that a great judo figure has visited us. Thank you, Alberto Gaitero.
