Rudy Giuliani will have to hand over half his fortune to the women he defamed

NEW YORK – A 1980 Mercedes that belonged to the actress Lauren Bacall. The autographed sports uniform of the famous baseball champion Joe DiMaggio. A precious collection of watches, including one given to him the day after 9/11 by the then French president Jaques Chirac and another that belonged to his father. Furthermore, two rings studded with diamonds with the icon of the Yankees, the favorite team. Without forgetting the luxurious penthouse overlooking Madison Avenue, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

These are just some of the goods – the most precious and unique ones – from which Rudy Giuliani will have to separate within a week. Yes, the now eighty-year-old former mayor-sheriff of New York who in 2020 was the personal lawyer of Donald Trump and he supported the tycoon in the false accusations of electoral fraud. On Monday a New York judge ordered him to cede an important part of his assets to two women he defamed during those elections by October 29th.

Georgia’s scrutineers Ruby Freeman e Drink Mossan African-American mother and daughter who worked at the same polling station and were accused by him without evidence of having manipulated the result of the vote in Fulton County based on a video where they exchanged something. A flash drive attacked the Republican lawyer. Actually a mint chocolate.

Rudy Giuliani: “Trump is a true leader. The image of him inviting fans to fight will change the election campaign.”

Giuliani continued to slander them for months despite no evidence: while the two were subjected to interrogations by the FBI and threats of all kinds from Trump supporters. They ended up suing him for defamation: and they won. In December, a Washington judge ordered the now disgraced former mayor to pay them as much as 148 million dollars to compensate her for the moral damages suffered.

He tried to oppose it: trying to declare bankruptcy through the legal mechanism known here as “Chapter 11”, that is, using the main bankruptcy provision of American legislation which allows you to remain in possession of your assets and pay your debts through a certain order of priority. It didn’t work. New York bankruptcy judge Lewis Liman rejected the request. Giuliani only has to appeal against the defamation ruling. But in the meantime the sentence takes its course.

The New York magistrate in fact noted that Giuliani did not obtain any exemption or suspension from the court. And he therefore imposed the transfer of the former mayor’s assets to a fund in the name of the two women. Accepting the request of Freeman and Moss’ lawyers who had among other things noted how “before declaring bankruptcy, Giuliani had put the New York apartment up for sale for 5.7 million dollars”.

Not only that: the lawyers of the two women will also be able to pursue the debt that Trump still owes his former lawyer. The tycoon in fact owes him 2 million dollars for unpaid fees and they will be collected on his behalf. The fund will then end up with numerous furnishings from Giuliani’s home, including the television, and the amount of funds deposited in three accounts opened at Citibank, the total of which has not been disclosed.

It’s all black and white, part of a very detailed list drawn up by the judge. Which set a very tight date for the change of hands also in response to Giuliani’s request to postpone everything until after the November 5 elections, for fear that Freeman and Moss «could use the decision for improper political purposes, causing an unnecessary frenzy media.”

A hypothesis not shared by the magistrate, according to which postponing the vote until after the vote was instead Giuliani’s way of trying to get a little help from Trump, in the event of victory. Of course, perhaps he will be able to keep some souvenirs like his father’s watch: as long as he can demonstrate that it is worth less than 1000 dollars. His son Andrew is trying to save what can be saved. The Yankees ring, for example, through a photo where it is in his hands: “My father gave it to me.” His other daughter, Caroline, instead turned her back on him, declaring her support for Harris: «I hate Donald Trump. He took my father away from me.” And now the rest too.
