[Scena DS] NINTV-DS v5.8 released

A new update has been released for NINTV-DS (basically Nintellivision), the console emulator Intellivision for portable console Nintendo DS/DSi.

This new update includes several improvements, including the fix for game selection which now correctly returns to the previously used directory.

Additionally, an issue with MOB collisions, which are now no longer rendered for off-screen pixels, has been fixed, fixing various issues in baseball games, such as the inability to pick up the ball in the outfield. Finally, many overlays have been added and improved, bringing the total to 180.

To work, place the file NINTV-DS.NDS on the flashcard or SD card. You still need to provide the BIOS files in the same directory containing the ROMs (they can be edited in Global Options):

  • grom.bin
  • exec.bin
  • ivoice.bin (optional, for Intellivoice games only).
  • ecs.bin (optional, for ECS games only).

Note: The GROM and EXEC binaries are proprietary to Intellivision and are not provided with the emulator (you will have to get them yourself).

  • Support for Cheat/Hack using NINTV-DS.cht (see the ‘extras’ folder and place it in the directory /data).
  • JLP support for accelerated functions, additional RAM and flash memory. When loading a game, use the button to load and force JLP support to be activated if it is not automatically detected.
  • ECS support for ECS games, including sound-enhanced games like Space Patrol. If it is not automatically detected, use the button when loading a game to load the options.
  • All known games run at full speed on DSi or higher (the DSi has double the CPU and 4 times the memory than regular portable DSs).
  • Many games run very close to full speed on older DS-LITE and DS-PHAT hardware, but you can play around with the configuration settings to get the most out of these games.
  • Support for custom overlays. Consult the folder extras for further details.
  • Support for manuals/instructions. Consult the folder extras for an example.
  • State saving support (3 save slots per game).
  • High scores for up to 10 scores per game with various sorting options.
  • Support cheats/hacks using NINTV-DS.cht (see folder extras and place it in the directory /data).
  • Numerous button/controller mapping options. Dual-Controller support (run and shoot at the same time).
  • JLP support for accelerated functions (multiplication/division), extra RAM and flash memory. If it is not automatically detected, when loading a game use the button to load it with options.
  • ECS support for ECS games, including audio-enhanced games such as Space Patrol. If it is not automatically detected, when loading a game use the button to load it with options.
  • Upload files in format .ROM o .BIN/.CFG.
  • Up to 1024KB (512K words) of emulated ROM memory.
  • RAM JLP a 16 bit emulata (8K parole).
  • JLP Flash support of 336 lines (42 sectors) for a total of 64K bytes (64512 actual bytes). Each game gets its own 64K of file supported flash.
  • ECS emulated with 2K 8-bit RAM, keyboard, extra audio channels, etc.
  • Emulated Intellivoice for games that take advantage of voice enhancements.
  • Up to 8KB of extra emulated 8-bit RAM for games like USFC Chess e Land Battle (note, the 2KB of 8-bit ECS RAM comes from this pool).
  • Up to 16,000 words of extra 16-bit RAM emulated over 8,000 dedicated words of JLP RAM.
  • Paging across all memory segments as long as the complete binary file is 1024 KB (bytes) or smaller.
  • From the emulator you can select the Player 1 controller or the Player 2 controller.
  • More importantly you can select ‘Dual Action A’ or ‘Dual Action B’.
  • Dual Action A uses the puck/buttons for Controller 1 and the keypad for Controller 2 (perfect for AD&D Cloudy Mountain o Tron Deadly Discs)
  • Dual Action B uses the puck from controller 1 and the buttons/keyboard for controller 2 (perfect for Astrosmash, Buzz Bombers and any game that you move and shoot).

Nintellivision includes a default standard overlay that simulates a real Intellivision controller along with some of the most common menu items.

Each game can also have a user-defined custom overlay. Numerous custom overlays are provided in the archive Extras.zip in the folder overlay-library.

You need to name the file .ovl with the same base name as the ROM file (for example, if you have Astrosmash.int o Astrosmash.romyou need to name the overlap Astrosmash.ovl and in the configuration for that game set the overlay to ‘Custom’).

By default, overlay files (.ovl) must be loaded in the same directory as the game ROMs, but you can override it in ‘Global Configuration’.

  • ECS support is partial. No UART/cassette.
  • The older DS-LITE/PHAT can only support a minimal ECS page scrolling scheme which allows you to play all commercial ECS games included.
  • On the DSi or better running with additional memory, a full scheme is used to flip pages and should play whatever you throw at it (the World Series they will have a voice). Each ECS game will allow you to use the Intellivision keypad to enter just enough information on the keyboard to launch the game, or you can choose the ECS mini-keyboard overlay.
  • Check the website for updates:
  • Fix for game selection, which now returns to the correct directory (the one you were in to select games).
  • Fix for MOB collisions now not rendering for off-screen pixels, fixing various baseball games (where you couldn’t pick up the ball in the outfield).
  • Many new and improved overlays, for a total of 180 overlays!
