Construction is currently underway at the district sports facility in Düsseldorf-Garath. A center for flag football is to be built there. There will be two fields. The city of Düsseldorf is building one of these in collaboration with the NFL team New England Patriots. The second is dedicated to Sebastian Vollmer, who played for the Patriots for eight years and won two Super Bowls.
“As a former Düsseldorf Panther player, Sebastian Vollmer is the perfect ambassador for American football,” says Düsseldorf Mayor Stephan Keller. “His successes in the NFL are inspiring to many young athletes. That’s why it’s a great pleasure for us that we can dedicate one of the two flag football fields in Garath to him.”
Vollmer was born in Kaarst and moved from the Panthers to the University of Houston in 2004, where he was offered a football scholarship. In 2009, he was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Patriots, for whom he played until early 2017. He is the most successful German NFL player in history and is still closely linked to the league today. Vollmer is an international ambassador for the New England Patriots and also works as an expert for NFL broadcasts on RTL.
“I am grateful and proud to be able to contribute to the further development of our sport and to inspire young people for football with my own field in my home country,” says Vollmer. “I’m looking forward to the first training camps and tournaments that we will hold together with the New England Patriots next year.”
The construction work on the two flag football fields in Garath should be completed by the end of the year and they can then be used from 2025. An official opening with Vollmer, Keller and the New England Patriots is planned for the spring.
