Sensation in the Limburg derby: KRC Genk too strong for STVV, which takes red twice, ex-Canaries are decisive for Genk

KRC Genk won the Limburg derby against STVV (3-2) on Sunday afternoon. The Truienaars had to continue with ten after fifteen minutes of play. At half time it was already 3-1 for Genk, but after the break things went a little less smoothly. Ex-Canaries Smets and Steuckers were decisive for Genk.

KRC Genk and STVV competed against each other in the Limburg derby on Sunday afternoon. A match that must be won for the fans for both clubs. At Genk, Bangoura came into the team for Sattlberger, who was not fit. Felice Mazzu chose the same eleven as against Ghent for the Canaries.

The Limburg derby has certainly been known for its spectacle in recent editions. Both clubs did not find their way in the first ten minutes, but the promised spectacle did not take long to arrive…

After about fifteen minutes of play, Tolu could only walk towards goal, but he was brought down by Taniguchi. Visser initially gave a yellow card for the STVV defender and a penalty for the home team. But after a VAR check, Tanoguchi was shown a red card, and it turned out that the mistake happened just outside the box.

Genk took full advantage of the red card and three minutes later it was already a prize. After a great move by Hrosovksy, Bonsu Baah was able to advance along the flank. He passed to Tolu who scored his seventh goal of the season. And suddenly things went very quickly in Limburg…

On the half hour, Jarne Steuckers (ex-STVV) was able to double the lead on the advice of, yes, Matte Smets (ex-STVV). A few minutes later, Bertaccini was able to explode the away section with a wonderful striker’s goal. Just before half time, El Ouahdi went one better by putting the ball cleanly past Kokubo. Mazzu had a lot of mental patching up to do during halftime.

But the STVV coach clearly did a good job during halftime. After the break, Bertaccini, against the flow of play, was able to put the 3-2 on the scoreboard with a clever header. The game continued to go back and forth, but in the end the home team took full control of the match again.

STVV launched a final offensive, but could no longer score. There was a lot more enthusiasm in the first half than in the second. In the very last minute, Brahimi received his second yellow card after a stupid foul on Hrosovsky. STVV ended up with 9 players.

In this way, Genk flushes out the defeat against KV Kortrijk and strengthens its leading position. The club is alone in the lead with 25 points. STVV loses a match for the first time since matchday three. The Canaries are in 14th place in the rankings.
