Sergen Yalçın, who left Jeremain Lens out of the squad while he was the coach of Beşiktaş, explained the inside story of the incident on the KAFA Sports YouTube channel. Yalçın’s speech about Lens is as follows:
“I called Lens into the room one day. I said, ‘Let’s talk for a while,’ he said, ‘Let’s talk, coach.’ ‘Why don’t you ever work in training?’ I said. My question is very simple: ‘You played in the Premier League, you came from there. If your training pace was there, what would they do there?’ I said, ‘They would have excluded me directly. They wouldn’t even have included me in the squad.’
