The triumph at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai paid off twice for Jannik Sinner: The South Tyrolean not only won his next major title in the Chinese metropolis, but will now definitely end 2024 as number one in the world.
Sinner, who won both the Australian Open and the US Open this season, is already 4,800 points ahead of Carlos Alcaraz in the world rankings. Behind the second-placed Spaniard is Alexander Zverev, the German is exactly 325 points short of Alcaraz. This trio already has their tickets for the ATP Finals in Turin safely in their pockets.
Novak Djokovic, who missed his 100th tour title in Shanghai, can also gradually start planning for the year-end final of the eight best players. The 24-time Grand Slam winner from Serbia is in sixth place in the race (ahead of Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev) and is 605 ahead of ninth-placed Alex de Minaur.
Things are looking even better for Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz in terms of participation in the ATP Finals than for Djokovic. While the American is currently 985 points ahead of de Minaur, Medvedev is already 1,515 points ahead.
