The Red Devils had a disappointing European Championship in Germany. Romeo Lavia was struggling with injuries and was not there. This season, Anderlecht’s youth product is back and is making a huge impression.
Lavia has had a lot of bad luck since his fantastic transfer to Chelsea. The midfielder fell from one injury to another. In the top match against Liverpool he was allowed to appear for just under an hour. The Red Devil did not disappoint.
Superlatives for Lavia
In England people are very complimentary about Lavia, who was able to produce the largest number of successful dribbles in 53 minutes and had the highest percentage of successful passes of all players. His performance was also scrutinized during Extra Time.
Lavia was stationed next to ex-Beerschot midfielder Caicedo and was everywhere on the field. “Also when losing the ball, hey. With Caicedo it is an ideal mix, I would say. But Lavia is just so good. He is the best midfielder I have ever seen with the youth,” says former U19 promise coach of Belgium Wesley Sonck .
The future of Belgium
However, Lavia’s progress was slowed down by injuries last season. “That is indeed the only problem. That he is often injured. But what that guy does… I have been following him since I was a Manchester City youth,” he quotes. Sporza Sonck. “His passes? That’s what we craved during the European Championship.”
According to Sonck, Lavia is the future of Belgian football. “Lavia sometimes gave passes that made me ask: “When did you see that?” He stands with his back turned, turns and plays directly with the left. Maybe he has a photographic memory, so he knows where someone is standing. But that balls always come out right… For me he is the future of Belgian football.”
Romeo Lavia completed the most dribbles (3) and was the most accurate passer (95%) to play over 45 minutes vs. Liverpool 👏
He only played 53 minutes 👀
