Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut winner of the European Open in Antwerp: “A gift for all the work done”

A meeting, ultimately without much suspense, Jiri Lehecka having never managed to find his rhythm. Quite the opposite of his opponent. “I think I came up with a lot of good things on the court today. I played one of my best finals in terms of level. I was very aggressive, I returned very well. I felt very solid from the baseline, changing directions a lot, going to the net, etc. I really enjoyed it.”

“The 2019 Davis Cup with Rafa was one of the most special moments I have experienced on court”

Asked about the future retirement of his compatriot Rafael Nadal, he considers it “a great example. I loved sharing moments with him, in training and in the Davis Cup. Our victory in 2019 was one of the most special moments I have experienced on the field. Watching Rafa play was always very special and I hope I can enjoy his last matches alongside him (Editor’s note: in November in Malaga for the final phase of the Davis Cup).

The end of Bautista Agut’s career is probably not far away either. “It’s normal as you get older to have thoughts like that, but I still have fun on the court, I feel good physically. I know the moment will come sooner rather than later, but for now I I feel good and I’m having fun.”

Next week, the Spaniard will compete in the ATP 500 in Basel. “If I would leave my place to David Goffin, lucky loser ? No, I’m ready to play. I feel good and I hope to be able to start the tournament on Wednesday to benefit from an extra day of rest. I hope I have enough energy to play another good week.”
