Sports and study, the recipe for success at the Caribbean Teaching Institute Corporation

A ‘downpour’ of blessings has fallen on the Caribbean Teaching Institute Corporation of Cartagena this year.

In the month of July, this educational institution was pleased to receive the Andrés Bello Award for student Joaquín Rivero for his good performance in the Icfes tests with a score of 409.. Read here: Giro de Lombardia: Tadej Pogacar’s historic triumph

It was a historic achievement in the academic part that shows that its teaching staff is of high quality.

Now, recently, its student athletes set a very high bar in the 2024 Intercollegiate Games, District Phase, by winning titles in team sports such as men’s baseball and women’s volleyball, and in individual sports such as athletics, weightlifting, and a bronze medal in badminton.

The Caribbean Teacher made history in these tournaments this year, as he won his fourth consecutive title in men’s baseball; in addition to two, for the first time, in women’s volleyball (pre-youth and youth), six medals in weightlifting: three gold and three silver, with Lewis Zambrano and Santiago García, respectively; a gold medal in athletics in the heptathlon event with Diana Ríos, and a bronze medal in badminton with the elementary school girl Yuberlys Chiquillo.

In baseball, the Caribbean Teacher has been the king for four consecutive editions under the direction of manager Guillermo Ramírez.

In women’s volleyball this year they repeated their title in the Junior category and added their first in Junior with the help of Eduardo ‘Tito’ Martínez, a real winner.

In weightlifting, the previous year they won two medals and this year there were six: three gold with Lewis Zambrano in the Youth 61 kilogram division and three bronze with Santiago García, in the Youth 81 kilogram.

Diana Ríos is the queen of athletics in the heptathlon event in the Intercollegiate Championships. He won the gold medal with great authority. And to put the icing on the cake, the previous weekend he participated in the National Under-18 Athletics Championships in Valledupar and won the gold medal. That performance earned him a call to represent Colombia in the South American Championship that will take place in December of this year in Argentina.

The marriage

Sports and education is the perfect marriage that is taking place at the Caribbean Teaching Institute Corporation, an educational project that was born in 1996 thanks to the tenacity and vision of Professor Arnold Barrios, its rector.

“I really don’t have words to describe what I feel right now. Happiness overwhelms me and I don’t know how to repay God for all these blessings. This successful sporting process has some people who have been the pillars to achieve these achievements. In baseball, we have Professor Guillermo Ramírez; in volleyball, Eduardo Martínez; in weightlifting, to Professor Yenis Zúñiga, and in athletics, to Yeison Lozano,” said Arnold Barrios, rector, very excited.

Barrios explained: “We are showing that it is possible for sport and academia to work harmoniously. There was a mistaken belief that sport and study did not go hand in hand. We have seen that our students have increased their academic performance thanks to sports. I have no way to pay all those teachers who have contributed to making this possible. I also highlight the role of my wife, Berta Ortega, who has been my motivational support in the midst of the difficulties we had at the beginning, when we founded this school.”

What the coaches said

Guillermo Ramírez, baseball:

“The truth is that this new title for me represents one more victory for my resume and is something important for the school because it continues its prestige and demonstrates that apart from study, sport is something that must be combined. In relation to the Intercollegiate Games, this year they were quite close, and we want all these sports to continue to be supported and for more institutions to participate. “This is my fourth consecutive title as manager at the head of the Caribbean Teaching Institute.”

Yeison Lozano, athletics

“The performance of our athlete Diana Ríos in the district phase of the Intercollegiate Games was excellent. In his first presentation in the heptathlon event he stood out in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump categories. This performance allows him to go to the departmental phase that begins next week. He will surely qualify for the National Phase, where we hope he wins a gold medal.”

Yenis Zúñiga, weights

“The balance is highly positive in the weights. We won three gold medals with Lewis Zambrano, our first choice for the Departmental Phase, and three silver medals with Santiago García. This process is excellent and we have the support of the rector Arnold Barrios, who has shown great interest in the development of the sport.”
