Third touchdown: St. Brown continues to win with the Lions

Amon-Ra St. Brown helped the Detroit Lions to a sweeping victory in the National Football League (NFL). The German-American wide receiver scored his third touchdown of the season shortly before the end in a clear 47:9 win over the Dallas Cowboys. In total, the 24-year-old caught four passes for a gain of 37 yards.

“That was exactly our job: go to Dallas and win this thing,” said St. Brown, who caught a four-yard pass from quarterback Jared Goff with four seconds left. It was the Lions’ fourth win in their fifth game.

The clear victory also ensured entries in the history books: Detroit had only scored more points in an away game in 1952 (52 points). In addition, the Lions scored more than 40 points in two consecutive matches for the first time in 1962.

But Detroit paid dearly for the victory: Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who currently leads the NFL list with the most sacks, broke his left tibia in a collision with Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. “He’s going to be out for a long time,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said.

Third game, third loss for Draisaitl’s Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers around Leon Draisaitl also lost the third NHL game of the new season. The title candidate took the lead for the first time against the Calgary Flames, but still lost 4-1 to the Flames and is still waiting for the first point.

Jeff Skinner made it 1-0 in the second minute and had the fans in Edmonton cheering – but after that the frustrating start to the season continued. The Oilers have already conceded 15 goals in three games and have only scored three goals of their own despite the offensive team of Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. It was the third win in the third game for the Flames.

The Oilers also got off to a miserable start last season. They lost ten of the first twelve games – but in the end the team around Draisaitl and McDavid still made it into the playoffs and into the final series for the championship.

Philipp Grubauer also left the ice with a defeat. With the Seattle Kraken he lost 0-2 to the strong Dallas Stars. The Texans have won all games so far this season.

WNBA: Fiebich and Sabally equalize with New York

Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally fought back with New York Liberty in the final series of the US professional basketball league WNBA. After the dramatic defeat at the start, the team around the two German national players won the second game against the Minnesota Lynx 80:66 (49:39) and made it 1:1 in the best-of-five series.

After her career-high 17 points in game one, Fiebich went without a score for a long time. The 1.93 m tall Landsberg native saved her only points for the exciting final phase; 1:30 minutes before the end she scored a three-pointer to make it 75:66. In 30 minutes on the floor at Barclays Center, Fiebich also contributed five rebounds and three assists. Sabally came off the bench to score one point from the free throw line in nine minutes of action.

“We told ourselves that we had to stick together and keep playing,” revealed Breanna Stewart, referring to the lost game one: “Every rebound is important and even if our offense falters a little, that shouldn’t affect our defense.”

Three-time Olympic champion Breanna Stewart (21 points) and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (20) particularly shone at Liberty. Napheesa Collier (16 points), Courtney Williams (15) and Alanna Smith (14) were the most accurate for Minnesota. New York started the game dominantly, and in the second quarter Fiebich and Co. were ahead by 17 points. The guests were able to reduce the deficit somewhat before the break.

Minnesota also held up better in the second half. The game came to a head in the final quarter and the Lynx came within two points. However, the guests were no longer able to make another comeback like at the start, when New York led by 15 points five minutes before the end and still lost.

The series now moves to Minneapoilis in the US state of Minnesota. Game three is on Thursday night (2 a.m.) at the Target Center. A possible decisive fifth duel would take place on October 21st in New York.

For Minnesota it is about the fifth title in the WNBA, which would make the team the sole record champion of the league. On the other hand, WNBA founding member Liberty is still waiting for its first title; in the previous season, New York lost the final series against the Las Vegas Aces 1:3. The only German WNBA title winner to date is Marlies Askamp with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2002.
