A double upset just before the half-time signal decided a fiery Walloon derby in Sclessin. Standard thanked Eckert Ayensa and Sutalo for three much-needed points after 1 out of 9. Although the former missed a penalty to completely close the match. Charleroi’s supporters misbehaved in the second half with flares and saw that their team’s tying goal came too late.

Standard – Charleroi in a nutshell:

  1. Man of the Match

Isaac Price scored a hat-trick for Northern Ireland against Bulgaria this week and continued his high form today. The 21-year-old midfielder was everywhere and is one of the indispensable forces of this Standard.

  2. Key moment

In the 95th minute, Isaac Mbenza provided the late tying goal with a wonderful free kick. In a chaotic final minute, the ball suddenly falls at the feet of Sylla, who wildly aims the unexpected 2-2 for Charleroi.

  3. Remarkable

Winning in the Walloon derby does not seem so obvious for Charleroi. The last time the Carolos grabbed the three points was on December 5, 2021.

Eckert Ayensa benefits from blunder in the Charleroi defense

In an atmospheric Sclessin, it was Charleroi that started the Walloon clash best. The visitors had complete control and allowed Standard to run after an elusive ball.

Yet the Carolos’ superiority did not result in real opportunities. Something something de Rouches succeeded shortly before the half hour. A corner kick from Bulat fluttered home at the far post by Price, who tested Koné’s fists for the first time from an oblique angle.

It was the fire that completely lit Sclessin’s fuse. Andreou completely misjudged a long ball from Epolo, causing Eckert Ayensa to enter the box with the ball. The German striker then simply cut the Cypriot out to calmly score the 1-0.

With peace in sight, Charleroi even had to concede a second goal not much later. Zeqiri cleverly headed another corner kick from Bulat towards the far post, where Sutalo headed in the 2-0 from close range.

Eckert Ayensa opened his account for Standard.

Mbenza’s gem provides a hectic final minute

Even after the break, Charleroi remained without inspiration for a long time. Until Price simply handed in the ball and Sylla then charged at Epolo alone. Fortunately for the Northern Irishman, the substitute stumbled at the moment of truth. Gone opportunity.

Standard responded with a cannonball from Zeqiri, but got away twice in the final quarter with attempts by Heymans and Titraoui.

On the other side, Eckert Ayensa missed the perfect opportunity to make it 3-0 10 minutes before the end when Camara was (easily) knocked to the ground in the box. However, the German came up with a very weak eleven meter, leaving the score 2-0.

A wonderful free kick from substitute Mbenza ensured the tying goal and some chaos in the final minute, but again Sylla left the score 2-2 in the dying seconds.

Standard is firmly nestled in the belly of the peloton, Charleroi has dropped to 11th place after a strong start to the season.

Ivan Leko: “Important victory after two defeats in a row”

  • Rik De Mil (Charleroi coach): “We are very disappointed. I think we started the match very well. We played well and then we let them into the match. In these types of matches, details are decisive. The 1-0 is an individual mistake on our part and the We conceded 2-0 at a standstill. Apart from those two goals, we gave away almost nothing. Afterwards we tried to play more offensively, but that came too late.
  • Ivan Leko (coach Standard): “This is an important victory, especially after the two defeats in a row. Today we played for a result and we deserved to win. In the end we made it difficult for ourselves. Charleroi is a very good team and they don’t have the number of points they actually deserve. This is only the second match in which we play with our strongest team. Let’s see where we are within 10 games.”

END

It was still shaky at the end, but Standard took the scalp of Charleroi after a 2-1 win in the Walloon derby. Eckert Ayensa and Sutalo gave the Rouches a double lead at halftime. After the break, Standard remained the better team, but Mbenza’s late 2-1 still caused the home team to panic. However, the Carolos did not go further than an honor savior.

Sylla aims the 2-2!

Sylla almost plunges Standard into mourning! The ball falls into the net at the feet of the young substitute, but he shoots wildly over. This was the visitors’ chance to score a point.

2-1! Gem from Mbenza

Like a bolt from the blue, it is suddenly 2-1. Mbenza takes a seat behind a stationary ball on the edge of the box. The substitute produces a wonderful falling leaf and curls the ball over the wall past Epolo.

Titraoui heads wide

Mbenza once again brings the ball in front of goal, where Titraoui aims hard wide with his head. No, it is not the visitors’ match.

An extra 6 minutes will be added.

Standard is on its way to a deserved victory.

Clumsy Koné

A moment of heartache among the Charleroi fans when Koné starts to fumble. The goalkeeper simply plays the ball into Benjdida’s feet outside the box and then tries to correct his mistake himself. Erik Lambrechts eventually gives the Ivorian a helping hand and whistles for a pushing error by the Standard striker.

Mbenza is also still in contention at Charleroi. Time is ticking away mercilessly for the Carolos. Can the visitors still create tension?

Eckert Ayensa produces a very weak eleven meter and aims straight into Koné’s hands. The goalkeeper is also alert in the replay.

Penalty for Standard!

Suddenly Erik Lambrechts points to the dot! Camara heads towards Rogelj at speed and is then lightly hit by the returning Titraoui. The winger lies down very easily, but seems to have convinced Lambrechts. The VAR also no longer intervenes.
