NFL: Steelers beat Giants to take division lead
The Pittsburgh Steelers joined the chasing group behind the Kansas City Chiefs with a win against the New York Giants. The 26:18 was the sixth win for the Steelers, who lead the AFC North and took advantage of the Baltimore Ravens’ mistake on Sunday. Quarterback Russell Wilson led the Steelers to their second win in his second appearance back from injury and had a touchdown pass to Calvin Austin. Austin scored a second touchdown when he carried a punt 73 yards into the end zone and was named man of the game.
For the Giants, where Jakob Johnson from Stuttgart was not in the active squad for the fourth game in a row, it was the sixth defeat in the eighth game of the season. Realistically, the playoffs are already out of reach for the team. In the NFC, the Washington Commanders are at the top as one of the teams with six wins. Only the Chiefs, who want to win the Super Bowl for the third time in a row this season, are still undefeated with seven wins in seven games.
Wagner only plays eleven minutes at Banchero Gala in NBA
National basketball player Franz Wagner was only on the field for eleven minutes during his team’s next victory in the NBA, leaving the big stage to a teammate. Paolo Banchero took control of the game against the Indiana Pacers and excelled at 119:115 with 50 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists. At the age of 21 years and 351 days, he is the youngest NBA professional since LeBron James to score at least 50 points and ten rebounds. Wagner had already entered the game feeling ill due to an unspecified illness and had to leave the field earlier than usual.
With a pass to his brother Moritz Wagner, Banchero ensured that the Magic found their way back into the game after they had given up a 13-point lead and were already down by 8 points in the final quarter. Moritz Wagner ended up with 14 points, four rebounds and one assist.
“Man, I’m tired. I’m so tired. But what a game,” Banchero said afterwards. “The first half was magical,” he commented on the 37 points from the first half.
Defeat and McDavid injury annoy Oilers in NHL
The Edmonton Oilers lost again in the NHL and also have to cope with an injury to star striker Connor McDavid. In the 6-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, the NHL’s best ice hockey professional was only on the ice for 37 seconds before he crashed into the boards and was unable to continue playing. According to coach Kris Knoblauch, McDavid will fly back to Edmonton and be examined there. “It’s hard. I hope it’s just something short-term, one or two games,” Knoblauch said.
Without McDavid, the Oilers were 3-0 behind after the first period and were unable to avert their fifth defeat in the tenth game of the season. Draisaitl didn’t even have a shot on goal and was pale after his brace on his birthday the day before.
Lukas Reichel, on the other hand, had a sense of achievement and scored his first goal of the season in the Chicago Blackhawks’ 5-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche. His goal made it 2-1 for Chicago. In the Blackhawks’ tenth game of the season, it was only the German international’s fourth appearance.
MLB: Dodgers get match points – Freeman shines again
The Los Angeles Dodgers have the American baseball crown in sight after their third victory in the World Series. By winning 4-2 at the New York Yankees, the Californians increased their lead to 3-0 in the Major League Baseball (MLB) final series. The Dodgers can win their first title since 2020 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday (local time).
The decisive man in the third game was Freddie Freeman, who scored two points with a home run in the first inning. Freeman had hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history when he scored four points with a home run in the last inning to end the game.
“In a foreign stadium you always want to try to strike early and silence the crowd. We did that today,” Freeman said. Before him, only Barry Bonds had hit home runs in the first three games of a World Series in 2002.
The Yankees are now threatened with a 0-4 defeat in the World Series against Cincinnati for the first time since 1976. The last such “sweep” in a final series was achieved by the San Francisco Giants against the Detroit Tigers in 2012.
The Dodgers are aiming for their eighth World Series title, while the Yankees would extend their record to 28th championship with their first triumph since 2009.
