Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev are not what you would call “pretty best friends.”

Already at their first tour encounter, in Miami in 2018, there were arguments – with an angry “Meddy” afterwards.

Tsitsipas was unable to cope with Medvedev’s style of play in the following encounters either. This makes his statement in Shanghai in 2019 all the more surprising when he described the Russian game as “boring, so boring”. “He has a strong serve and when you get him back he just returns countless balls into the court.”

Tsitsipas on Medvedev’s tennis: “Generations will remember this”

As part of this year’s tournament in Shanghai, Tsitsipas has now rowed back. He respects Medvedev much more than before, and people have also talked about the disputes and their reasons. He, Tsitsipas, is one of those people who wants to solve things, even if in this case it took a while.

There are many things that Medvedev has brought to the game, albeit “quite unusual ones”. Because there aren’t many players who play like him. “In the past I have said some nasty things about his game. But when I thought about these things, I have to say: I was totally wrong.” Because there are many interesting aspects of Medvedev’s game that are very different from those of other players. “That makes him unique as a player. (…) And it gives tennis a different dimension in the sense that it can be played differently. (…) Many generations will remember this.”

Tsitsipas probably also himself: Because the direct comparison between the two is 10 to 4 – for Medvedev. Who also won again two days ago, 7:6 (3), 6:3 in the round of 16 against a very angry Greek. This time, however, that referred to the referee.
