Which is why the <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/10/i-want-to-thank-roger-federer-for/" title=""I want to thank Roger Federer for…"”>Swiss Indoors Basel is once again something for tennis lovers after Roger Federer’s retirement

Although only the final of the Swiss Indoors Basel was sold out, the tournament successfully pushed forward its emancipation from record winner Roger Federer. The focus of future planning is much less on an event audience than on the Swiss tennis community.

Brennwald sets his sights on Sinner

Brennwald signed nine players this year, an unusually large number, but none from the top 5 in the world rankings. This is also due to the fact that an exhibition match was held in Saudi Arabia the weekend before, in which participation brought in three times as much money as winning the tournament in Basel (446,045 euros).

Nevertheless, the intention is to lure either Carlos Alcaraz again or Jannik Sinner to the Rhine knee for the first time in the future. Along with John Newcombe, the Italian is the only number 1 in the history of men’s tennis who has never (yet) competed in Basel. Nevertheless, Roger Brennwald says: “We won’t be left out of breath if Sinner never shows up in Basel.”

This includes Dominic Stricker, albeit at a lower level at the moment. The 22-year-old from Bern, quarter-finalist in 2023, and the 39-year-old doyen Stan Wawrinka ensured that the Swiss Indoors were able to present two local round of 16 players on Thursday. Jérôme Kym (21) and Henry Bernet (17), both from the region, were also an enrichment. Kym played his way into the main draw for the first time, Bernet gave a remarkable test of talent with his win against Fabio Fognini.

The Swiss Indoors acknowledge its roots with wild cards, but also a youth tournament for Swiss that was held in advance and in which 3,000 tickets were distributed to club presidents, tennis teachers and interclub champions. Tournament director Brennwald describes this as a “test run” and an “investment to promote the tennis community”.

The sanction to host an ATP 500 tournament in Europe in October was extended in 2022 by fifteen years until 2037. That is more than enough time to establish the Swiss Indoors Basel even more strongly as a unique tournament for tennis lovers after Roger Federer’s retirement.
