Holger Rune (ATP 14) has so far taken part in one final and one semi-final at the Swiss Indoors. But that wasn’t the only reason why the Dane started the semi-final duel with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard as favorite. The 21-year-old Frenchman, who started the year as world number 205, had never before been in the semi-finals of an ATP 500 tournament.
But Mpetshi Perricard, who has now moved up to 50th place, showed no signs of nervousness in the St. Jakobhalle. After both players had completed all of their service games in the opening set, the Frenchman fended off a set point from Runes with a service winner in the tiebreak. Shortly afterwards he won the first round with another serve winner.
This loss of a set temporarily threw Runde off his game. At 0-0, Mpetshi Perricard earned the first break points of the game – and thanks to a bit of luck, took advantage of the second with a net roller. This burden proved to be too big for Rune, the Frenchman confidently secured the 7:6 (8:6), 6:4 victory with his second match point.
Duel between two premiere finalists
Waiting in the final on Sunday (from 3:15 p.m. on SRF Zwei) is Ben Shelton, who marched through like Mpetshi Perricard in his first Basel participation. The American won the first semi-final in a duel with his doubles partner and good friend Arthur Fils 6:3, 7:6 (11:9).
In the first set, Fils was faced with the first break points at 3:4 – and promptly had to give up his serve on Shelton’s second attempt. Shortly afterwards, the American brought the starting set into the dry.
Shelton fends off 5 set points
In the second round, the two played at eye level for a long time – until Fils took a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak and then earned 3 set points. But Shelton pulled his head out of the noose and fended off two more chances from the Frenchman for a decider. For his part, he used the second match point to win.
