TARANTO – As part of the projects and initiatives that aim to confirm and increase the sporting vocation of the city of Taranto, there is an important decision adopted by the Municipal Council of the Ionian capital. This is the approval of the technical and economic feasibility project aimed at the construction of an outdoor sports facility, dedicated to three disciplines: rugby, American football and baseball. Characterized by interventions that involve a total investment of €3,500,000.00, as reported by the councilor for urban planning, Edmondo Ruggiero, the work has received the green light from all the relevant bodies, including the CONI Sports Facilities Commission and the national sports federations of baseball, rugby and American football.
The first in central-southern Italy to host three overlapping disciplines, this innovative facility will be built on an area owned by the municipality in the Paolo VI district of Taranto, precisely in the stretch between Corso Buozzi and Via De Gasperi. The project, drawn up according to the regulations contemplated by the new Procurement Code, will soon be the basis of a tender for the joint assignment of the executive design and execution of the works. According to estimates by the Urban Planning Directorate, the works should start by February 2025 and then finish in spring 2026.
Having laid the foundations for the construction of a multifunctional facility represents a further achievement for the Administration led by Mayor Rinaldo Melucci, which in the wake of the “Taranto Ecosystem” plan, is increasingly committed to the implementation of strategic works aimed at urban regeneration and social life of the peripheral areas of the city. As demonstrated by the sports center that will be built in the “Paolo VI” district, the Authority’s priority is to transform peripheral areas into places of aggregation by promoting sustainable and inclusive development, an objective that can be pursued with initiatives ranging from the creation of infrastructures modern ways to enhance public spaces and implement cultural projects that involve young people and families in the area.
