Spain’s top star Carlos Alcaraz was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 tournament in Shanghai on Thursday. The world number two had to admit defeat to the Czech Tomas Machac 6:7 (5/7) 5:7 in 114 minutes. A new edition of the final duel in Beijing against Jannik Sinner, whom Alcaraz had defeated in three sets a week ago, also fell through.

Machac offered Alcaraz a duel on equal terms from the start. After the Spaniard missed a break point at 1:1, the decision in the first set had to be made in a tiebreak. Both players wobbled when serving, but after almost an hour the Czech used his second set point and took the lead 1-0.

In the second round, Machac, currently number 33 in the ATP rankings, made it 2-1 with a break, but also had to give up his serve to make it 3-3. The 23-year-old Czech took Alcaraz’s service once again to make it 6:5 and then served safely to win the match, thus ending the Spaniard’s twelve-game winning streak.
