SHANGHAI (Reuters) – The singles final of the men’s tennis Masters Shanghai was held in Shanghai on the 13th, with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner (23, Italy) finishing fourth and taking his total of 24 wins at the Grand Slam tournament. He defeated the proud Novak Djokovic (37, Serbia) 7-6, 6-3, becoming the youngest player to win the tournament.

Sinner has won his third Masters 1000 tournament this season and fourth overall. This season, he has shown remarkable success, winning the four major tournaments in Australia and the United States, winning seven tour wins, and ranking first in the world for the year.

Sinner won three consecutive matches against Djokovic, bringing his record back to a tie at 4 wins and 4 losses. He also became the first player in history to never give Djokovic a break chance in two consecutive matches. Asked if he had found a way to beat Djokovic, Sinner said: “It’s hard to tell him his secrets because he doesn’t have any weaknesses. I just try to use the little opportunities that come my way.”

At stake in this match is Djokovic’s 100th tour victory, making him the third player in history since the Open Era, after Jimmy Connors (USA) and Roger Federer (Switzerland), to watch Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) in the stands. Federer was also there to watch the match.

Djokovic praised Sinner, saying, “He was too good today. He was strong, he was fast, he was amazing. You’ve had a very good year. You deserve this win.” He added, “It was nice to meet Roger too. I’m not used to seeing you in the stands. I wish you could play with us on the court. It was probably my first time playing in front of you and I felt a little pressure, but it was really good. “Thank you for being here,” he said.
